SportSims.net, known for accurately predicting Super Bowl outcomes for the past 21 years, thought it would be fascinating to discover how these two remarkable teams would fare against each other.
According to SportSims.net, who simulated this extraordinary fantasy matchup 10,000 times, the Patriots win an astonishing 64% of the games. In a representative game, SportSims.net calculated that the Patriots would win 24-21 over the Dolphins. Of the 10,000 where the Patriots won, they averaged a score of 30-20. In the 36% of the games where the Dolphins won, they averaged a score of 28-21.
“The Patriots are just a powerhouse team,” said Steve Olson of SportSims.net. “If this team isn’t spoken of as the best of all time, they’d have to at least be in the conversation,” Olson added. The average total points scored: New England – 26.4, Miami – 23.1. Olson and his colleague, David Holt, who has been running this simulation program for 21 years, entered the players’ actual season statistics into their simulation engine to obtain the most accurate results.
“This would be an ‘edge-of-your-seat’ game,” said Dave Holt of SportSims.net. He continued, “The results of the simulation show surprisingly close scores. It would be incredible to watch these two awesome teams actually play this game.”
The representative game demonstrated how closely matched these two teams are. Miami’s defense dominated the first quarter and the Dolphins lead 10-0. Both teams had successful drives in the second quarter and at half-time the score was 21-7, Miami. In the first minute of the third quarter, the Patriots scored on a Bruschi interception then began to control the game. In the fourth quarter, the Patriots scored twice on Brady passes for a total of 17 unanswered points in the second half, and go on to win the matchup. Olson stated, “The ’72 Dolphins just can’t stop Brady. He’s the difference-maker.”
